IRON COUNTY HISTORICAL AND MUSEUM SOCIETY RECEIVES $2,000 PLUM CREEK FOUNDATION GRANT
L’ANSE, Mich.--August 31, 2009--The Plum Creek Foundation recently awarded a $2,000 grant to the Iron County Historical and Museum Society to help preserve historic buildings on the museum’s property.
The Iron County Historical and Museum Society maintains 26 historic buildings on its 9.5-acre campus. The society will make renovations to the Carrie Jacobs-Bond House, built in 1896; the church, built in 1912; and the Shingle Mill, reproduced from materials rescued from the Chicagoan Lake Pavilion that dates back to the 1930s. Renovations include repairing and repainting the church steeple, repairing damaged roofs on two of the buildings and removing moss from the Carrie Jacobs-Bond House.
“Our community’s history and heritage is reflected in the buildings of the past, and this project will help preserve that history for future generations,” said Marcia Bernhardt, curator for the Iron County Historical and Museum Society. “We are grateful to the Plum Creek Foundation for its generous donation and support, and we look forward to preserving our area’s heritage through these renovations.”
The Iron County Historical and Museum Society collects, houses and preserves artifacts, including historic structures. The organization presents these artifacts in interpretive exhibits, which show the economic, occupational, social and cultural development of the Iron County area and its relationship to the present.
