NEGAUNEE HISTORICAL SOCIETY RECEIVES $1,500 PLUM CREEK FOUNDATION GRANT

L’ANSE, Mich.--Dec. 12, 2008--The Plum Creek Foundation recently awarded $1,500 to the Negaunee Historical Society to help fund the digital archiving of the Negaunee Iron Herald.

The Iron Herald, published between November 1873 and August 1968 documents the beginning and development of the mining and logging industries on the Superior Range.  The Negaunee Historical Society currently has fragile and aged hard copies of the Iron Herald.  Digitizing the Iron Herald will allow users to access the papers via the Internet, making the paper available to researchers, students and anyone interested in the history of Negaunee.

“Our community’s history and heritage is reflected in these papers, and this project will help preserve that history for future generations,” said Miles Parkkonen, board member of the Historical Society.  “We are grateful to the Plum Creek Foundation for its support, and we look forward to preserving Negaunee’s heritage through this archiving process.”

The Negaunee Historical Society was founded in 1982 as a nonprofit, private educational and historical organization.  Its purpose is to preserve the history and heritage of the Negaunee community for future generations.  The Historical Society owns, operates and funds the Negaunee Historical Museum.

The mission of the Plum Creek Foundation is to provide philanthropic contributions to support and improve the general welfare of life in the communities that Plum Creek serves.  The Foundation board meets quarterly to review applications submitted from organizations in the company’s operating communities.  Visit the Community Involvement page on Plum Creek’s Web site at www.plumcreek.com to download an application.
