SFI Objective 12: Providing Public Outreach and Education

< Previous | Overview | Next >

As a large corporate landowner, Plum Creek not only takes an active role in responsible land management, but is also committed to communicating with the public and educating those interested in the business and science of forest management. This commitment takes the form of publications, presentations and tours conducted across our ownership for various segments of the public.

In Wisconsin, for example, Plum Creek recently adopted and improved the Monico Forest Resources Tour, a nine-mile automobile tour for the public which displays and explains the techniques foresters use to harvest trees and enhance regeneration while supporting resident populations of fish and wildlife. In Montana, our foresters and scientists regularly participate in the Flathead Forestry Expo, a popular event to educate the public on all aspects of forestry including silviculture, manufacturing technology, wildlife habitat protection and watershed management.

We also conduct an annual congressional tour for elected officials and their key natural resource staff, providing firsthand opportunities to learn about and discuss land management issues and environmental programs.

Plum Creek also actively participates in State Implementation Committees designed to help implement the SFI program at the state level. The Company has supported public involvement in the SFI program and helped create a forum for public participation. These efforts to develop public outreach and involvement help improve forestry and establish mechanisms to report inconsistent practices.
